The last 5 minutes of the Basketball Diaries
SCENE 32: Jim grovels outside his mother's locked door, begging her for money. His mother calls the police. His mother calls the police. ° There is no entry like this in the book.
There's a memorable, heart-wrenching scene in "The Basketball Diaries" that has teenage drug addict Jim Carroll begging his mother to let him into her apartment. He cries, he pleads, he curses and cajoles - and ultimately tries to break down the door.
In the final scene Jim approaches the stage door to give his poetry reading. Pedro stops him and, to celebrate his release from Riker's, offers him a bag of dope. Jim refuses. The film ends with Jim reciting his work before an audience.

The Basketball Diaries. (film) The Basketball Diaries is a 1995 American biographical crime drama film directed by Scott Kalvert and based on an autobiographical novel by the same name written by Jim Carroll. It tells the story of Carroll's teenage years as a promising high school basketball player and writer who develops an addiction to heroin.
The Basketball Diaries. Synopsis: Film adaptation of street tough Jim Carroll's epistle about his kaleidoscopic free fall into the harrowing world of drug addiction. As a member of a seemingly unbeatable high school basketball squad, Jim's life centers around the basketball court and the court becomes a metaphor for the world in his mind.
For me, the best scene is when Jim (DiCaprio) is dope-sick outside his mother's door; what he immediately realizes is his former home. The worst? The first time he shoots heroin.
Two scenes that were most incredible are when Jim's mom chains the door locking him out. Only his arm and face are visible through the gap allowed by the security chain. It doesn't take an addict to feel his pain. And at the same time, Lorraine Bracco is on the other side of the door and you know how bad it hurts her.
