The Irish game of handball was originally played on a hard clay floor, with one wall of stone at the front of the court, against which the ball was struck. The ball, the four-wall court, and the system of scoring were developed during the 18th century, when the game was a popular pastime in many parts of Ireland.
Handball in America was originally played against any blank wall or gable-end, but the game soon progressed to three-wall and four-wall alleys. From the middle of the nineteenth century, Irish emigrants took the game with them across the Atlantic, where it attained tremendous popularity.
Many accounts of handball are given by writers of the Eighteenth Century who indicate that one-wall handball was being played in Ireland from at least 1700 A.D. The southeast of Ireland became a newsworthy area in 1798 as a result of civil disturbances during that year.
